The Tripod is still standing, however we have seen some significant changes over the last 24 hrs. The ice has darkened overall, and there is a small ice jam along the dock of the Tanana River, as well as upriver around the bend just beyond the black railroad bridge. Approx. 1 1/2 miles upriver from the Tripod, the Tanana has a nice open channel of flowing water that reaches about half way across the river. This is where we have begun to see a large build up of broken ice, an ice jam. Below the Tripod where the Nenana and Tanana River meet, the water is flowing and eating away at the large sheet of ice that sits on the Tanana. We can visibly see near the river bank dock along the Tanana, that the ice has a nice crack along the edge. 

 

 

May 1, 2026

We have seen some major changes in the ice over the last 48 hrs. The ice has darkened overall and have a few more areas of dark ice rot spots. Additionally, there is a nice channel of overflow flowing along the Tanana River dock. Upriver from the Tripod beyond the black railroad bridge, there is open flowing water around the bend of the river. Beyond that, further upriver, there is a nice channel of open water along the bank that goes past Nenana Native Council's Culture Camp. Downriver from the Tripod, the Nenana River is open and flowing.

April 27th, 2026

The Tripod is still standing and the ice around it seems fairly solid. We have seen a slight change within the last couple of days with more visible dark spots on the ice, which usually indicates ice rot. The Nenana River which is downriver from the Tripod has a nice wide open channel flowing, eating away at the ice on the Tanana River. Upriver from the Tripod approx. 1-2 miles, there is an open channel that is continuing to open up and lengthen along the bank of the river. ​

April 24th, 2026

The Nenana River has had a flowing channel of water that has been eating away at the ice for the past several days. That channel of open flowing water where the Nenana and Tanana River meet, downriver from the Tripod continues on for approx. 4 miles. 

Upriver from the Tripod has a lot of overflow, but looks to be pretty solid under the railroad bridge. However, past the bend of river beyond the railroad bridge, the river has numerous sections of ice rot all the way toward the airport. In that section of the river upriver past cultural camp there is a very large hole that will continue to grow as the water flows.
